The Houston Astros are set to make their first-round selection in the 2024 MLB Draft with the 28th overall pick.
Exploring Potential Fits for the Houston Astros in the 1st Round of the 2024 MLB Draft
The Houston Astros own the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo has the Astros taking Stanford catcher Malcom Moore in that spot. Houston could also look at Kansas State shortstop Kaelen Culpepper if he’s still on the board.
His p🍃artner Jim Callis has Houston taking prep shortstop Millard West.
“The athletic Lewis is riding some helium into the first round with talk that he could soar as high as the teens. The Astros are scouting the prep shortstops hard, with Lindsey and Sanford ahead of Johnson.”
In Keith Law’s latest mock draft, which dropped this morning, the Astros are expected to land Iowa right-hander Brody Brecht. “Brecht is a college pitcher who’s less polished than his peers, with athleticism and arm strength that point to more upside, very much the sort of player Houston general manager Dana Brown has liked in his career running drafts.”
However, Law’s first mock draft had Houston taking Stanford catcher Malcom Moore, matching with Jonathan Mayo’s most recent mock draft. Here’s what Law had to say last month about what he’s hearing in the Astros:
“The Astros have been all over the place this spring; GM Dana Brown was in Michigan to try to see the matchup between high school hitters Caleb Bonemer and Dante Nori this weekend, but it was rained out. They need help in their system sooner than a high schooler can provide, and I expect them to go for a college player in the first round as they did last year.”
Kiley McDaniel Mississippi State outfielder Dakota Jordan at No. 28. He agrees with Law’s assessment that Houston has done a lot of work on prep players but will likely go with a college bat here.
“The Astros are kicking the tires on some prep position players but are believed to be heavily leaning toward college position players for this pick. GM Dana Brown was seen scouting Jordan and DeBarge at conference tournaments, with those two and Virginia SS Griff O’Ferrall the leading candidates for this pick. Houston is also considering prep righties here, eyeing William Schmidt and Ryan Sloan.”
