The 2024 MLB Draft begins on July 14 and there are several rounds in which players will be selected. It has the most rounds of any of the major sports in the United States. Let’s look at the total rounds, when they will take place, and more.
How Many Rounds are in the MLB Draft?
There are 20 rounds in the MLB Draft and it takes place in July during the middle of the MLB season. Players who are drafted are the💮n sent to play for minor league affiliates ꧋of the team that selected them.
Until 2019, the draft was up to 40 rounds and there were years when teams kept pickin🦄g players until they passed. In 1965, there were 72 rounds and 824 players selected. Hall of Famer Mike Piazza was a 62nd-round pick in the 1988 MLB Draft. MVP and Gold Glove winner Keith Hernandez was a 42nd-round pick in 1971.
July 14: Rounds 1-2 and First Two Supplemental Rounds
July 14 holds the first two rounds of the draft as well as the first two supplemen🍸tal rounds. The supplemental rounds give extra picks to teams that have lost certain players to free agency. These include free agents who reject a qualifying offer from their respective teams.
July 15-16: Rounds 3-20
On July 15, the second day of the draft, rou🐻nds 3-10 are selected. Then, on July 16, rounds 11-2ꦡ0 round out the event. Picks from rounds 1-10 have what is called a slot value. It is the recommended signing bonus for the player at that spot. Rounds 11-20 do not have slot value and players can sign up to $150,000 without that money counting toward the bonus pool.
Top players can be found anywhere in the draft and you never know who will become a superstar. Albert Pujols, one of the gr♈eatest hitters ever and a future Hall of Famer, was selected in the 13th round of the 1999 ML🧸B Draft. Hall of Famer pitcher John Smoltz was a 22nd-round pick before a superstar career with the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.
