Golden State Warriors Mock Draft: GS Takes UConn PG in Second Round

The Golden State Warriors were bounced from the Play-In Tournament by the Sacramento Kings and missed the 2024 NBA Playoffs. The offseason has major questions and it starts with the NBA Draft. The only problem is the Warriors don’t have a first-round pick. Let’s look at who they might take in the second round, potential trades, and more.

No First-Round Pick for Warriors

The W🔯arriors first-round pick belongs to the Portland Trail Blazers which means Golden State will not be adding any premier talent to its team in the draft unless it makes a trade.

Second-Round Option For GS: Tristen Newton – UConn

The Warriors couldꦉ go with point guard Tirsten Newton out of UConn with the number 53 overall pick in the 2nd round. Newton is coming off back-to-back National Championships so he knows how to play in big games.

In 2023-24, while grabbing 6.6 rebounds and dishing out 6.2 assists for the Huskies. He shot 80.8% from the free-throw line. Newton shot just 32.1% from downtown so that will have to improve but he has a well-rounded game which could make him a l꧂egitimate role player for Golden State.

Could Warriors Make a Trade?

Could the Warriors make a trade to move up in the draft? Unlikely for two reasons. First, the Warriors don’t have much to offer. The only young valuable player they have is Brandin Podziemski with whom they aren’t going to part ways.

The salaries of Andrew Wiggins and Chris Paul also make it tough 🍸for them to move. The second reason, and the more important for not trading, is that most scouts believe this draft class is one of the weaker ones in previous years. There is no point in Golden State giving up valuable pieces for a high pick.

Huge Offseason Questions Face Golden State

(Will the Warriors keep Klay Thompson? Photo: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports)

Klay Thompson is a free agent and all signs point to him leaving the team this summer. There are issues with major contracts like Chris Paul and Andrew Wiggins that might keep the Warriors from re-signing Thompson. It might be the end of the Curry, Thompson, and Green big three that helped the Warriors win four NBA Ch💙ampionships in the last decade.

Curry is entering his final years but still has plenty left in the tank. Golden State has to decide if they want to make one more push for a title with Curry, or start the rebuild and let Curry be a veteran leader to teach 💖the next generation of Warriors before he retires.

Will Golden State Get Curry Help This Summer?

There are plenty of trade rumors out there as everyone is trying to f💞igure out what Golden State wi☂ll do to help out Stephen Curry. Names like Dejounte Murray and Zach LaVine have been thrown around. These types of trades will be difficult as we said before.

If the Warriors were putting together a trade package it would likely have to include Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, and a future first-rounder. This would be a salary dump for Golden State in t🌌he hopes of getting another player in their prime to work alongside Curry. The hope would be Golden State could compete for one more title in the next couple of years.

Another issue with this is Golden State will be looking at a rough bench situation. We have seen teams like the Phoenix Suns give up as many players as possible to add another star but it just doesn’t work. You need depth to win games in the playoffs. Also, Curry and Draymond Green are no longer in their play 45 minutes in the playoffs days.
