Rain, cautions, and drama. The Greatest Spectacle in Racing did not disappoint despite starting multiple houꦇrs after the scheduled green flag. Let’s look at the race results and biggest storylines during the 2024 .
2024 Indy 500
The best day in motorsports got off to a boring start as F1’s Monaco Grand Prix put people to sleep. It was essentially a professional display of “follow the leader” resulting in Charles LeClerc leading from start to finish, claiming the checkered at his home track. More disappointment was on ta😼p as rain forced the start of the Indy 500 to be delayed. Thus ruining any chances of witnessing Kyle Larson doing the Double.
Hope was not lost for fans though, as the excitement was palpable once the green flag did drop from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Passes were frequent on this day, as the 649 overtakes were the most since 2017. The front of the field was constantly cycling as well as the 18 different leader♌s, set the record for the most during an Indy 500. All of these leaders also finished the race on the lead lap breaking the record of 11 set just last season. Lastly, the 49 lead changes during the race are the 4th most in Indy 500 history. With the final lead change coming on the last lap for the second consecutive year, and just the fourth time ever.
Indy 500 Results
Josef Newgarden, the 2024 Indy 500 odds favorite is your winner. He becomes the 11th multiple-time champion of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing and just the si𒀰xth to do so in back-to-back years. His win came at the expense of IndyCar fan favorite Pato O’Ward, who finished runner-up for the second time in the last three years. NASCAR driver Kyle Larson looked like a legit podium contender but came home with a disappointing 18th-place finish after a pit road speeding penalty put him a lap down with 70 laps remaining.
