Chicago White Sox 2024 Mock Draft: Three Big Bats To Boost The Sox System

The Chicago White Sox head into the 2024 MLB Draft with a crucial decision at 5th overall. While pitching depth is always a need, the Sox have seen several young arms come up this season and make an immediate impact. With that said, it feels like going with a bat in the first round is the most likely path for the South Siders. ♉Here’s a look at three potential names in the draft we could hear when the 5th overall pick is announced.

Chicago White Sox Mock Draft: Three Potential Hitters

Konnor Griffin, SS, Jackson Prep (Mississippi)

Griffin is a big body for a shortstop at 6’4, 215 lbs but that didn’t stop the Sox from drafting Colson Montgomery! The Jackson Prep star has big-time power and possesses the speed to be a real base-stealing threat in the MLB. It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll stick at shortstop or move to the outfield, but his ability to play either gives the Sox options. The Sox system is loaded with pitching, so adding a big bat like Konnor Griffin to the middle of the field would give the farm a big boost.

Chicago White Sox Mock Draft

Jac Caglianone, 1B/LHP, Florida

It’s very possible that Caglianone doesn’t make it to the 5th overall pick, but if he does I think the Sox would love to grab him. Caglianone reigns supreme as the nation’s top two-way talent, making him a shoo-in for the prestigious John Olerud Award, which recognizes the most dominant hitter-pitcher combo in college baseball. While he possesses impressive tools on both the mound and at the plate, Caglianone’s explosive offensive growth this spring has swayed many scouts, and it’s looking like his left-handed bat is more valued than his lefty pitching arm at the next level. A left-handed power bat is something the Sox have been in search of for some time, and Caglianone could fit that bill.

JJ Wetherholt, SS, West Virginia

The left-handed hitting shortstop possesses a well-rounded skillset and a consistent track record of college production, but there are some factors giving scouts pause. A nagging hamstring injury significantly impacted his college season, raising concerns about durability. Additionally, at a compact 5-foot-10, he doesn’t quite match the typical physical profile of a top draft pick. However, these hesitations might be misplaced. Historically, players like Wetherholt, who excel in all aspects of the game, have been undervalued. Raw power often develops later, and in today’s game, surprise sluggers can emerge from any package. Wetherholt’s solid foundation in all areas creates a platform for unexpected surprises.

2024 MLB Draft Info

The Maj🌞or League Baseball Draft deviates from the norm of most professional sports by taking place right in the middle of the season, traditionally happening in July. This year, from July 14th to the 16th, the baseball world will descend upon Fort Worth, Texas with anticipation buzzing. Over the course of 20 rounds, a will have their names called, with the Cleveland Guardians holding the coveted honor of making the very first selection.

Unlike its counterparts in other major sports leagues, the MLB Draft boasts a unique history filled with adjustments and milestones. Established in 1965, it marked a turning point for baseball, transitioning from a free-for-all system where wealthy teams dominated amateur talentജ acquisition.

The draft’s initial format was a sprawling affair, encompassing a whopping 40 rounds. This extensive process allowed teams to sift through a vast pool of amateur players, unearthing future stars alongside hidden gems. Iconic names like Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, and Albert Pujols all found their paths to greatness through the draft, solidifying its importance in shaping the league’s landscape.

However, the 2019 collective bargaining agreement ushered in a new era for the draft. Recognizing the evolving baseball landscape, the number of rounds was streamlined to a more focused 20, with the addition of compensatory picks for teams who lose free agents. This shift aimed to pri💫oritize high-ceiling prospects with the potential to make a quick impact at the major league level.
