Bills Stadium Project, Cardinals Owner Comes Under Fire, and Other NFL Bullets

The Arizona Cardinals are in the news for the wrong reasons. But first, the Buffalo Bills have taken𒀰 a significant step toward making their new stadium a reality on Tuesday.

  • According to a release by the team, the Bills, New York State, and Erie County have signed all of the necessary documents and contracts for the Bills’ new stadium project in Orchard Park. The release says that the three parties involved are approaching a “groundbreaking ceremony later this spring.”

  • All of the signed documents have been submitted to the Erie County legislature, and there is now a 30-day review period for those documents. Here’s the complete statement by the Bills, New York State, and Erie County:

    • “New York State, Erie County and the Buffalo Bills are pleased to formally announce that all documents and contracts for the Bills new stadium project in Orchard Park have been signed and will be submitted to the Erie County Legislature for their 30-day review. Today marks another significant step taken as we approach a groundbreaking ceremony later this spring. We are thankful for the public/private partnerships we have shared to make this project in Western New York a reality.”

  • The Bills released a new set of renderings for the stadium project and named Fall 2026 as the targeted open date for the new stadium.

  • This is an open-air stadium concept in Buffalo, New York. The Bills had to play a home game in Detroit last season due to a crippling snowstorm, so building an open-air stadium seems questionable. Aside from the weather concerns, NFL teams generally lean toward building indoor stadiums to host other events such as the Super Bowl, CFB Playoffs, NCAA Final Fours, winter concerts, etc. So, the Bills are leaving themselves vulnerable to the climate and knee-capping their potential revenue sources.

  • The Cardinals may have a new GM and head coach for the 2023 season, but some is being aired. Cardinals executive Terry McDonough has filed an arbitration demand with the NFL accusing Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill of demoting McDonough in 2019 after he objected to a scheme circumventing the suspension of then-GM Steve Keim.

  • McDonough’s arbitration demand claims that he and former head coach Steve Wilks were issued “burner phones” to communicate with Keim. This occurred in 2018 while Keim served a five-week DUI suspension. McDonough has claimed he suffered “illegal and retaliatory mistreatment and abuse” from Bidwill after objecting. He also claims that Steve Wilks’ firing after the 2018 season was related.

  • With the NFL loosening the restrictions on the number of helmets that teams can have, we’re going to see some cool designs continue to trickle out. The Denver Broncos teased a new alternate design on Twitter on Tuesday:

  • So, there’s not much there, except that most of the image is white. A white helmet could be slick, especially with the Broncos’ retro “D” logo. The Bengals recently debuted a white helmet look, an excellent contrast to their traditional orange helmets. We also learned recently that the Eagles will return their classic Kelly Green look as an alternate in 2023.

  • The Cincinnati Zoo tweeted some funny news recently. Joe Burrow has overtaken Fiona the Hippo as the most popular thing in Cincinnati. Fiona had a five-year run atop the reader’s choice list before being dethroned by Burrow.
