NFL Notes: Matt Canada Fired by Steelers, MNF Thoughts, More

Steelers fans have been called for one thing: Matt Canada fired. On Tuesday, they got their wish. Mike Tomlin announꦐced that the Steelers have parted ways with their offensive coordinator after the offense struggled once again against the Browns on Sunday.

  • The Steelers’ offense has been struggling this season, ranking 28th in the NFL in yards and points per game. During the game against the Browns, the Steelers offense was sluggish, and they only managed to score in the third quarter when Jaylen Warren ran a 74-yard touchdown run just 50 seconds into the second half. Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett had a tough game, throwing for only 106 yards and no touchdowns in the loss. Pickett has only thrown one touchdown pass in his last five games.
  • With the loss, the Steelers fell to 6-4 and slipped behind their AFC North rivals, the Browns (7-3). The Steelers are now holding onto a wild-card spot but only a half-game ahead of the Buffalo Bills (6-5) as they enter a Week 12 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Before Week 9, Tomlin moved Canada from the booth to the field to join quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan on the sideline. The Steelers then went on to win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 10 with a score of 23-19 but unfortunately lost to the Browns on Sunday.
  • Rumors about Canada’s job security in Pittsburgh started circulating last season due to questionable play calling and predictability. Although the Steelers gained more than 300 yards in 13 out of 17 games last season, they only scored 30 points once and at least 20 points in just eight games.

  • On Sunday, Steelers running back Najee Harris vented about the offensive struggles at his locker after the game. The way the Pittsburgh Steelers have been winning football games this season was never sustainable. I know it. You know it. Najee Harris knows it. “I’m just tired of this s—,” Harris said at his locker after the Steelers lost to the Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh’s offense managed only 249 total yards and 10 points against the Browns.
  • “It’s hard right now, bro,” Harris said. “I want to say what I really want to say, but it is difficult. We can fix it, but … I am just tired of it. I am tired of this stuff, bro. I don’t know how to … are they fixable? Yeah. Are we gonna fix it? S—.”
  • that Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will handle most of Matt Canada’s day-to-day operations, while QB coach Mike Sullivan will call the plays on gameday. He also said that the decision to fire Canada was his and that he didn’t consult with GM Omar Khan or ownership before making the change today.
  • Doubting the Kansas City Chiefs isn’t something that I’m interested in doing quite yet. But I’m getting there. The Chiefs held a 17-7 halftime lead but failed to score in the second half for the third consecutive game, averaging an NFL-low 5.3 points per second half this season.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs held a 17-7 halftime lead but failed to score in the second half for the third consecutive game, averaging an NFL-low 5.3 points per second half this season. More on the Eagles victory over the Chiefs on Monday Night Football:
  • Titans running back Derrick Henry is frustrated. After their loss to the Jaguars on Sunday, Henry said that Tennesee’s 3-7 record : “I don’t know what rock bottom feels like, but … whoo, yeah man, it’s tough. It’s definitely tough,” Henry said. “We just haven’t been good enough — I’m making no excuse. We haven’t been good enough as a team, and that’s what happens in this league. it’s a grown man’s league, so it ain’t good enough.”
  • Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson has been suspended for four games without pay by the NFL. The league ruled that his first-quarter hit on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs was “a serious violation of the playing rules.” Jackson is expected to appeal the suspension, which will be heard by a hearing officer appointed jointly by the NFL and the NFL Players Association.
  • This is the second suspension of the season for Jackson, who is a 14-year veteran and was a first-round pick with the Texans in 2010. Earlier in the season, he was suspended for four games due to an illegal hit on Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave in Week 7. However, upon appeal, the penalty was reduced to two games.
