The Los Angeles Chargers’ 2023 didn’t go as planned and as a result, they fired head coach Brandon Staley with just 3 games remaining. However, they landed the offseason’s most coveted NFL coaching candidate Jim Harbaugh, and have begun the roster overhaul process. The Chargers will look much different when they hit the field in 2024 and they’ll surely be adding key contributors via the next month. So let’s see the Los Angeles Chargers’ top 5 priorities when the Draft comes around.
Los Angeles Chargers Positions to Address in NFL Draft
As we mentioned, the Chargers have already started altering their roster in the vision of Jim Harbaugh. This is no more apparent than on offense where LA allowed Austin Ekeler to sign in Washington and traded the franchise’s second-leading receiver Keenan Allen to Chicago. They’ll need to replace multiple offensive pieces meaning the NFL Draft may be heavy with those positions.
Wide Receiver
Not only did LA say goodbye to Keenan Allen, but they also released the often-injured, but incredibly gifted deep threat Mike Williams. In addition, they sent Jaylen Guyton packing leaving last season’s 1st Round pick Quentin Johnston and Joshua Palmer as their primary receivers. We know that with Harbaugh in town, the focus will be on the running game. However, a legit alpha on the outside will be required for the Chargers to be an efficient offense. Look for LA to target one of the many top-tier options at wide-out early in the NFL Draft.
Linebacker
The Chargers lost Kenneth Murray Jr. to free agency and released Eric Kendricks this🍨 off-season. They brought back former Chargers second-round pick Denzel Perryman to help replace them but they’re stil🦋l light at the position and need to bolster a defense that struggled up the middle for much of the 2023 season.
Score great Chargers gear from !
Cornerback
Los Angeles struggled mightily against the pass last year allowing the third-most yards in the NFL, and they ranked in the bottom 10 in𝕴 passing touchdowns allowed, interceptions for, and net yards per attempt. Asante Samuel Jr. is their only returning starter at corner, and his future in LA is up in the air with his contract expiring after this next season.
Edge Rusher
This is probably the strongest part of the Chargers’ defense with Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack in town. That said, they’re the only go⭕od pass rushers on the outside for LA, and Mack is on an expiring contract while Bosa is routinely injured. The Bolts need to solidify the position with a 3rd option that can get after the QB.
Fullback
You might be asking yourself if this position still exists with the recent transition to spread offenses in football. Let me assure you, there are still fullbacks in the college ranks, and if any team is going to draft one late, it will be the Los Angeles Chargers. Jim Harbaugh is old-school and needs a competent run-blocking fullback to lead ⛄the way for his new running back Gus Edwards.
